Obituary of Daniel MacLuster Lundy

Daniel MacLuster Lundy affectionately known as Butchie was born on May 5, 1951 to Susie Walker Lundy

and the late George Daniel Lundy in McKenney, Virginia. He was called to be with the Lord on May 31,

2017 after an eleven month long battle with cancer. He was a retired Custodial Supervisor for Newark

Board of Education and had a thriving carpentry business.

Daniel was a talented carpenter and handy man who took pride in the ability to fix almost anything. He

enjoyed the thrill of figuring out how to solve a mechanical problem with cars, washing machines, stoves,

boilers, garage doors, air conditioners, etc. He was an excellent mathematician able to do complex math

in his head and make very accurate size and/or quantity estimations. If you knew him, he likely has fixed

something in your house or on your car.

Daniel was a charismatic man who was a captivating storyteller. His booming voice and animated nature

could hold anyone’s attention from beginning to end. He enjoyed telling stories about his childhood like

the one about the family pig named June that they used to ride or when he was shot with a BB gun by a

friend while quail hunting. He still had over 50 BB pellets in his legs. Story telling came naturally and

was welcomed at family gatherings.

Daniel was a die-hard NY Giants and NY Mets fan. He loved wearing his NY Giants gear even to his son-in-

law, Hassan’s Denver Bronco parties. He loved watching the games on TV and could be heard yelling at

the coach and players from his seat. He was also an avid pool player often winning local pool

tournaments. He enjoyed playing at Overton Social Club where both he and his late friend, Sam

Hankerson have a mural of themselves as some of the greatest pool sharks in the area. He also enjoyed

going to the racetrack, playing the lottery and talking about politics. He had a ferocious appetite. He

loved biscuits, rolls - basically any kind of bread, potatoes, beans and soup. He also had a mean sweet

tooth; he would put jelly on anything including cube steak. He would also devour ice cream and cake.

Daniel was a walking encyclopedia often reciting dates, locations and little known facts about almost

anything. He loved to try and stump you by asking if you knew about things like bird nest soup, any of

the World Wars, and when things were invented and who invented them. If you did not know about what

he was asking you, he was happy to tell you everything he knew. He also loved to tell you to “Google it” so

that he could prove he was right.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Daniel Lundy; brother, Alvin Lundy and his daughter,

Pamela Lundy-Saleem. Daniel leaves to cherish his loving memory, his three devoted children, Cheryl

Lundy Swift (Hassan) of Westfield, NJ; Katherine Lundy of Rahway, NJ; and Daniel K. Lundy of Harlem,

NY. He is also survived by six sisters whom he loved dearly, Vilma Crenshaw (the late Linwood) of

Hopewell, VA; Nadirah Raheem of Newark, NJ; Sandra Parham (Embar) of Warfield, VA; Ruth Fegans

(Sonny) of Macon, Georgia; Leonora Graves (Edward) of Alberta, VA; and Princess Edmonds (George) of

Petersburg, VA. Three grand-children of whom he was extremely proud, Michaiah Lundy, Kyla Saleem

and Noah Saleem.

Loving aunts and uncles, Gladys Wyatt (the late Joseph) of South Chesterfield, VA; Ruth Lee (George) of

Petersburg, VA; Pearl Bland (Harold) of McKenney, VA; Meredith Lowe (the late Gordon) of McKenney,

VA; Herman Lundy (Claudia) of South Hill, VA; Ben Lundy (Jane) of Petersburg, VA; and Catherine Lundy

(the late Albert). A host of nieces and nephews including the devoted Raheem clan as well as Roteria

Parham and his wife Tabitha. His ex-wife Mattie has remained a true, devoted friend throughout his life.

He loved her and appreciated her support until the end. Other devoted family and friends including, the

late Sam Hankerson, Jeff Bacon, Russell Williams, Collie Bradshaw, and Herman “Mu” Johnson.
