Arlene L. Moses November 18, 1944 – September 9, 2018 Arlene Lolita Moses was born in Newark, New Jersey on November 18, 1944 to John Lewis Bowe and Annie Bell Bowe. She was the eldest of two children, including her brother Edward. During her childhood, Arlene’s family moved to Cumberland, Virginia and later to Brooklyn, New York, where she grew up. Arlene attended Clara Barton High School and graduated in 1961. She then went to Columbus, Ohio, got married and had one child, Earl, in 1964. Soon after, she returned to New York. Arlene enrolled in Kingsborough Community College (known today as Medgar Evers College), earned an Associate’s degree in Nursing, and became a Registered Nurse for nearly a decade. In 1974, Arlene re-married James Moses, a corrections officer, and they moved to Queens, NY. She retired from nursing in 1975 after a bad car crash severely injured her back. Following the car accident, Arlene developed a love of gardening and she filled her home with countless flowers and plants. Gardening remained a favorite pastime when Arlene and James moved in 1981 from Queens to the Poconos in Milford, PA. James also had a green thumb and following his years in corrections, he opened a successful landscaping business in Pennsylvania. The couple later lived in Kingsley, PA for a few years, before moving to Palmerton, PA in 2011. Together, they beautified their homes and were devoted to one another for 44 years of marriage. Throughout her life, Arlene enjoyed numerous hobbies. She loved scary movies, reading history and horror books, and was an excellent dancer. In New York, she and her brother used to take over the dance floors at various parties and ballrooms doing “the slop.” An avid baker and cook, Arlene was well known within the family for her excellent cakes, pies, desserts and other culinary treats. She took special joy in making her son and each of her nephews their favorite cakes. She delighted in showing her grandkids how to make gingerbread houses. And over the years, she created her own huge collection of hundreds of unique, hand- written recipes. Additionally, Arlene was extremely talented and creative with sewing and crocheting. She used ornate fabrics to crochet beautiful quilts, including those that adorned her living room and dining room walls. Arlene always loved watching tennis and in her later years, she never missed a major match on TV. In 2008, Arlene’s mother, Annie, moved from New York to Pennsylvania to live with her daughter and son-in-law, James, who cared for both women until each of their deaths. Arlene passed away peacefully in Bethlehem, PA on September 9, 2018 at the age of 73. Her loving husband and son were by her side during her transition. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Annie and John Bowe.
