Charles Irving

February 16, 1938 — May 31, 2023

Charles A. Irving was born February 16, 1938 in South Boston, VA the son of John Irving and Elsa Easley. Charles was the youngest of 7 siblings. He peacefully departed life on May 31, 2023 at St. Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.


Charles graduated from Hailfax Training High School in South Boston, VA, then attended West Virginia State University. He joined the United States Army and served until honorably discharged. Charles worked as a supervisor at Essex County Detention House until retirement.


Charles married Carolyn Jones at their home in Hillsborough, NJ on December 29, 2006, surrounded by family and friends.


Charles was a member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, where he enjoyed Sunday Services and the Music Ministry. He and his wife attended several of the church sponsored gospel concerts.


Charles enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Charles and Carolyn were often one of the first couples on the dance floor at family celebrations. Charles had a special relationship with his grandson, Terran III. They spent numerous hours together attending baseball games, taking walks, and swimming at the YMCA. Most recently Terran III was one of his primary companions. Charles was an avid reader and enjoyed reading inspirational and financial books. He also loved sports and loyally followed the Boston Celtics, NY Yankees and NY Giants.


Charles was predeceased by his father, John Irving; mother, Elsa Easley; sisters Mary Elizabeth Williams and Jamie Wilkerson; and brothers Edgar (Crad) Irving, James Irving, and Roy Irving.


Charles leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife, Carolyn Jones-Irving, two loving daughters, Jill Pressley (Terran) of Somerset, NJ and Xandra Statum (Douglas) of Easton, PA; one special grandson: Terran III; sister Ailene Williams of Orlando, FL; sister-n-laws Beatrice Quittley (Noah) of Newark, NJ and Claretta Sawyer of Chesapeake, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
