Effie Washington

March 8, 1917 — September 2, 2018

Effie Hill Washington was born March 8, 1917 to Ruby Berry in Bremo Bluff, VA In October, 1932 she moved to Plainfield, NJ where she attended school. Effie Washington, who is also known to family and friends as “Mom” moved to Westfield, NJ from Hagerstown, MD in 1941. It was during that same year, Effie became a member of Bethel Baptist Church. As a longstanding member of Bethel Baptist Church, some 77 years, Effie was involved in several of the church’s ministries. She was a member of the Usher Board and organized the Golden Age Club. Effie was also a member of the Woman’s Fellowship and the Missionary Society. In 1946, Effie wed Cledell Tuggle. They lived in Westfield until his passing in 1959. She later married Joseph Washington in 1970 where for 22 years, they enjoyed a happy life together. Effie was employed as a matron at Westfield High School in Westfield, NJ. After 19 years of service, she retired in 1979. Effie also had many hobbies. She was an avid bowler. She enjoyed cooking and was famous for her pound cake that we all call “Mom’s” cake. She liked to garden, read, crochet and was a great Met’s fan. Effie also played a pretty good game of Pinochle. In her later years, Effie often enjoyed visits from family and friends. She looked forward to long talks with the Pastor, communion with the Deacons and wonderful visits from the Bethel church family, She is survived by her daughter, Marian Ross Henry, three grandchildren Calvin Rae Henry, Jr., Diane Henry-Jordan and Michael Henry; seven great grandchildren Anthony, Calina, Christina, Michael Jr., Brian, Marian and Miah. She also leaves behind; Phyllis Simmons, Adrienne Dixon, Annette Gaynor, Jake Simmons Jr and their children. As well as other extended family Mr. and Mrs. Mcgee, Dalia Mcgee, Carolyn Wyatt and family and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Effie was blessed to live 101 years and we are blessed to have had her in our lives. She will be remembered for her great wit and love of her church, family and friends.
