OBITUARY Early on Tuesday morning, July 14, 2020 a servant of the Lord by the name of Erma M. Porter transitioned from her hospital bed at John F. Kennedy in Edison, New Jersey to her new home in heaven. She was born on November 24, 1939 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to the parents of the late Leroy and Annie Mae Brown. Erma was educated at the Horry County School System in South Carolina. As a young adult, she relocated to New Jersey and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized by the Late Rev. Isaiah Fowler of Miracle Baptist Church, Plainfield, NJ. She remained at Miracle under the leadership of Rev. John M. Terry and was a faithful and dedicated member. She loved the Lord and cherished her church. While at Miracle, Erma enlisted in God’s Army as a Deaconess, an Usher, a Missionary, Church School student, Choir member, and served as Kitchen Committee Chairperson for many years. She was an excellent cook as it was evident in the delicious meals she prepared. Erma was united in Holy Matrimony to Ralph Porter on August 20, 1966. They were blessed with four children: Nathaniel, Wayne (deceased),Christopher, Tonia.OneGoddaughter Shonte Harrison-Simmons (deceased). Erma was a hard worker. She was a cook for many years. Erma also worked at Standard Plastic in Plainfield/South Plainfield, NJ and National Can in Piscataway,NJ. She was later employed at Ethicon in Somerville, NJ for 21 years in the Production Department and became Shop Steward before retiring in 2001. Erma also was a representative for Avon over 40 years with her best friend Lorraine Graham (deceased).She loved her family and enjoyed helping others. In her younger years Erma enjoyed playing softball at the yearly Church’s picnic andplayed for her job Ethicon. Erma was preceded in death by her three brothers - Wendell Brown, Stafford Brown, and Thomas Brown: one sister – Rev. Eugenia Greene. She leaves to mourn her passing, her loving husband – Ralph Porter; three children – Nathaniel Gagum (Crystal), Christopher Porter, and Tonia Porter; six grandchildren – Rebecca Leah Mabson, Khalfani Porter, Kadeer Porter, Ky-Asia Hill, Sharis Porter, and Christian Porter; one great grandson – Kasai Benjamin; one brother – Roy Nelson Brown (Rebecca), and one sister – Dr. Margie Spivey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. “Sleep on Servant of God.
