Evelyn Virginia Bruington, the second child of the late Ben and Gertrude Bruington, was born in Jones County, NC on August 14, 1938. She graduated from Woodington High School in Lenior County.
Evelyn Bruington relocated from Jones County, NC to Newark, NJ in 1960, where she met Leroy Hudson. There she would further her education by enrolling in Essex County College. While working and attending school, their family started to grow. She then attended Jersey City State College where she received her bachelor's in early childhood development. Evelyn then was employed by Newark Preschool Center, matriculated to Assistant Teacher, Teacher, and then Area Coordinator. She retired from Newark Preschool while being an active member at Mount Zion Baptist Church on several of its ministries including the choir, nursing ministry, Willing Workers, and in the pantry.
Evelyn was a mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt, mother-in-love, teacher, an advisor and a comedian. She had a heart for working with children as an Early Childhood Specialist.
Evelyn Bruington educated many young people and touched the lives of many. Anyone who came in contact with her left with a laugh and a smile. She was a person who loved as Jesus wanted all of us to with agape. She loved you hard and could burn in the kitchen until her later years. She could make a mean peach cobbler, bread pudding or a biscuit. She was a hall member at High Point Garden where she was in charge of the hallway. She was still teaching kids as in her past with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Evelyn gained her wings on February 19, 2025, at the young age of 86. She was preceded in death by her late husband LeeRoy Hudson of Newark NJ, sister Fannie Bruinton "Shug”, and brother Robert Bruington “Buddy”. She leaves to cherish her memory: four children- Lee Bruington (Barbara) SC, Gregory Bruington VA, Gwendolyn White NJ, and Booker Bruington (Nikiti) VA; loving sisters, Carolyn Burney "Chapman” (NJ) and Betty Hodges (NJ) ; special cousin , Frances Burney (NJ); special dear friend Earl “Rick” Dickerson (NJ); 10 grandchildren, 4 bonus grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
