Florence Fields

Florence Evelyn (VanHorn) Fields was born to Robert Chester VanHorn and Olive Mae Middleton on April 11, 1936 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. On December 20, 2018, Mother Fields awoke to a bright, sunny morning, greeted staff who came into her room to get her day started at the Somerset Woods Nursing Home and returned to bed where she entered her final rest. Mother Fields attended the New Brunswick school system. She was previously employed at Bell Telephone (Mom Bell), Revlon, Gilbert’s Plastics, and Baxter company before entering permanent disability. Mother Fields loved attending church, listening to gospel music and more importantly reading God’s Word in her Bible every day. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 2000. Her newfound relationship with the Lord was confirmed through a water baptism on July 7, 2001. Mother Fields also enjoyed reading her morning prayer when she awoke each day and evening prayers before she laid down to sleep. Her love for reading the Word for Today booklet was shared with her family and friends. Mother Fields was a member of Unity Deliverance Ministries in New Brunswick, NJ and then at the Lakewood, NJ location. At Unity Deliverance Ministries, Mother Fields served as an Usher and taught Sunday School. When she became unable to endure the travel to church, she began to fellowship at the Changing Lives Ministries in South River, NJ and her final church home, Abundant Life Family Worship Church in New Brunswick, NJ where she was considered one of the Mothers in Zion. Mother Fields enjoyed spending time with family and friends especially during Thanksgiving dinners, family reunions and enjoyed visits from all who took the time to see her. Her other favorite pastimes included watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune; she was good at shouting out the correct answers. Mother Fields loved to praise and worship. Her dependence on continuous Oxygen and other medical issues did not stop her from waving her hands, tapping her feet or even giving a praise dance for the many blessings and all that God has brought her through. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 23. She was a prayer warrior for her family and always helped others in times of need. In the past, Mother Fields was a devoted caretaker to her father who she adored and sister, Marilyn until they transitioned into eternal rest. Mother Fields was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Olive VanHorn; two daughters, Beverly Lucretia Fields and Pippi Rena Fields; 1 granddaughter, Lucretia; 3 sisters, Marilyn VanHorn, Susan Wilkens, and Barbara Johnson; 3 brothers, Columbus Jackie VanHorn, Leedell Tyus and Robert Ralph Tyus; and former husband, Thomas E. Fields Sr. She leaves behind her sisters, Lillie Owens, Mary (Charles) Speights, Patricia Savage and Ella Washington. Mother Fields also leaves behind two close cousins who she considered as sisters, Jean Kelton and Benita Beverly Garcia. Her legacy lives on through her children who she leaves behind to mourn and cherish memories; Daughter, Daveen who was Mother Fields’ caregiver (son-in-love, Samuel Mann who she loved dearly) and bonus daughter, Dominique Woolfork. Sons: Dwayne Fields who was the backup caregiver, Thomas “Eddie” (Muriel) Fields Jr., Maurice Fields, Robert (Robin) Fields Sr., Ronald (Teresa) Fields Sr., Anthony (Belinda) Fields and bonus sons, Duwan (Emma) Woolfork, Dramaine (Rachelle) Woolfork and Drashaun (Tracy) Sanders. The love and life of Mother Fields will last throughout the lineage with over 25+ grandchildren, many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. She will also be remembered by her special friends, David Woolfork, Ms. Jessie Arotin from North Brunswick Senior Housing and the Parker Day program), church family, daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Wilson, Goddaughters Tanisha Amilcar and Kawania Brinson, her caring CNAs – Certified Nursing Assistants (especially Leticia Moran & De Ann Morand) and other staff (Acute Unit Nurse Robyn Nicklus, Physical therapists, Nurse Director Jessica Gearon, and Social Workers, Tasia Ali and Sumesh Sadanrangani) of the Somerset Woods Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Mother Fields was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Well done, good and faithful servant…. Enter into the joy of your master. This not a goodbye…. “Loves ya and ciao for now.”
