Joan Lorraine White

January 1, 1941 — February 27, 2025

Irvington

Joan Lorraine White was born January 1, 1941 to the late Herbert and Mattile White. On February 27, 2025 she gained her wings and went to the Lord.

Joan was raised and attended public school in Scotch Plains NJ. In her teens, she relocated to Newark, NJ in 1960 with her parents and siblings. She was the second oldest child of six; they were a very close family. When you heard or saw the White family you knew it was going to be laughter and smiles every time.

Joan worked as a Domestic Worker for many different families and enjoyed helping them. Joan loved her own family; she took care of her father for many years and was very close to her mother who she named Mere.

Joan loved to sing and dance, she was known to cook pots of food like Neckbone and Potatoes, Stringbeans and White Potatoes, Baked Chicken and a pot of beans. Joan loved to dress because she will be matching her clothes all the way from the hat, earrings, socks, shoes and in between. Joan never rode in anyone's front seat. You will always find her in the back seat of the car even if it was her and the driver.

If you were looking for Joan, you could’ve found her on the 25 bus heading downtown Newark or on the 70 bus heading to Livingston Mall. She loved to ride and didn’t wait for anyone.

Joan’s house was always the place people enjoyed going to because she welcomed you with open arms. Her Nieces and Nephews enjoyed going to her house because she always made you laugh and had the most kids. She was an entertainer.

She is preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Mattile White, her Grandsons Larry Mclean and Maurice Sr, her sister Sheila Jones and two brothers Bishop and Tyrone White.

Joan leaves to cherish her precious 5 generations, 8 children Kay White, Sheila, Kevin and Gerald Graham of North Carolina, Briggit Millner, Sharon White, Towana White (Hassan Ali) and Lonzo Graham (Angela Graham) of Newark, NJ. 17 Grandchildren Hakeem,Takeema, Tawanka, Shannon, Wala, Taquan, Takieyyah, Tamadg, Sharayah, Ashley, Sareedah, Shanayah, Shawna, Gerard Jr, Quadriyyah, and Akeelah. 22 Great grandchildren, and 9 Great great grandchildren.
