It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lascell Smith, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on November 11, 2024. Born on July 7, 1950, in Amity Hall, St. Thomas, Jamaica, Lascell was the son of the late Norbert Smith and Nora Sutton.
Lascell spent his formative years in Amity Hall, surrounded by the vibrant culture and beauty of his homeland. In the mid-1980s, he migrated to New York City, where he embraced new opportunities while holding on to the rich traditions of his Jamaican roots. He worked tirelessly
as a construction and custodian worker, dedicating himself to providing for his family, even in the face of life’s challenges. In 2011, he moved to New Jersey, where he lived the remainder of his years.
Lascell is survived by his eight loving children: Omar Smith of Portland, Jamaica; Marceil Smith of St. Thomas, Jamaica; Georgia Smith of New Jersey, USA; Nadisha Smith of New Jersey, USA; Gabre Smith of St. Thomas, Jamaica; Lascell Smith Jr of New York City, USA, Nicole Minott of New York City, USA; and Moya Heinzelmann of New Jersey, USA. He was also a proud and doting grandfather to Aiden Harris, Rachael Minott, Tamarsha Smith, Simone Smith, Sashane Smith and Allison Smith.
Lascell was known for his love of cooking, his infectious laughter during games of dominoes, bingo, and pinochle, and his enjoyment of pork and carrot cake. He had a knack for bringing people together with his storytelling and genuine warmth, creating a sense of community wherever he went.
His friend and neighbor, Peter V. Saunders, fondly remembers him: "My good friend Lascell Smith, my neighbor directly upstairs from me. I will never forget all the bus trips we took, sitting next to each other on the bus, heading to Walmart or on a day trip to one of the parks. You would tell me stories of what life was like in Jamaica—the beach, the ocean, the recipes you prepared back home, the island life you lived in your home country.
We always sat at the same table in the Chinese buffet. Wonderful times, happy times. I will never forget you. I hope someday we will meet again in Paradise. I will always love you."
Lascell’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and resilience. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
