Marion Watson

January 14, 1938 — August 23, 2017

Marion was a loving father and grandfather and hardworking man. He enjoyed watching Kung foo movies, and playing tennis. The Obituary Marion (“Mario”) Dane Watson was born in Poncano, Florida on January 14, 1938. He received his education in Metuchen, New Jersey, although he had to stop his schooling early in order to help his father provide for their large family (seven girls and four boys). Marion never complained about having to work at an early age – he remained a “silent hero” to his siblings. Marion learned blacktopping and paving from his uncle, Willie Jones, and later worked for many years alongside his younger brother William, helping him run his paving business (Watson Paving). Family and friends would marvel at his ability to make his tractor “sing” by precisely moving dirt and asphalt to the exact place he wanted it to go in order to create exceptional residential and commercial driveways throughout New Jersey. He was a hard worker, conscientious and determined to help his brother make his business the success it was. Marion was also an avid bowler, bowling weekly on a league near his home in Neptune. He was known to show off when he got a strike by sporting his specially made “Superbowler” cape. One could not help but be in a good mood when Marion was around with his light hearted jokes. Marion loved to watch sports on TV. In particular he loved watching the Williams sisters’ tennis matches as he would sit and debate with his brother-in-law, Chester, about the match and world affairs. He was known for making his entrance wherever he went with a hearty “Hellooo Therrrre!”. Over the years, Marion acquired a love of God that surpassed his own understanding. He was in awe at the comfort his new relationship with God gave him. Brought up here in Second Baptist Church, he had a generous spirit, evident in his fierce love of his family, and his daunting affection for his Grandchildren. Marion was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Cevelton and Rosa Lee Watson; two of his sons: Phillip and James; three brothers: Alfred, William E. and Joe D., and three sisters: Annie Rose W. Bell, Geneva W. Howard, and Betty Sue W. Gordon.. Marion leaves to cherish his memory his children: Bernard (Sarah; California); Kenneth (New Brunswick); Darlene Plunkett (Rahway); Kevin (Delaware); Tanesh (California); Akbar Haskins (Bordentown); Ali Haskins (Krystal; North Brunswick); Raheem Drayton ((Naffie Kemakai; Georgia); Mynett Waters (Darnell; Somerset); 23 Grandchildren; 33 Great Grandchildren; four sisters: Mary S. Cooper (Chester) of Neptune; Regina Watson (Mark Wosatka) of Somerset; Catherine Crittendon (Terry) of Plainfield, and Bibi Angola of Long Beach, California; special friend Joanne Ricks of Somerset, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
