Martha Deborah Chapman was born on November 9 1933, in Paulsboro, NJ. She was a daughter of the late Rev. Richard and Althea Johnson. She was educated in the Paulsboro, NJ public school system and graduated from Paulsboro High School. She passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2023.
Martha was married to the late Deacon Stanley Chapman, Sr. In 1959, they settled in Linden, NJ. They had four children: Stanley, Jr. Deborah, Sandra, and Darlene. Martha was a dedicated member of the Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church and she served on the women’s adult choir, women’s club and was also a Deaconess. She was careful to ensure that her children and grandchildren were active in the life of the church. A deeply spiritual woman, she spoke glowingly of her Heavenly Father and longed to be with Him someday.
Martha was employed at Cosmair L’Oreal in Clark, NJ for 30 years. She retired from Cosmere and lived quietly in Rahway, caring for her grandchildren and volunteering at daycare centers. She loved to sew and was known to make the clothes that her children wore. Martha also enjoyed traveling, visiting friends and talking with them on the phone, doing crossword puzzles, and listening to gospel music in her free time.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Richard and Althea Johnson, her husband Deacon Stanley Chapman Sr., five brothers John, Richard, Samuel, Donald and Alvin Johnson. One grandson Malcolm Harvey, and great grandson Chace Malcolm Hollman-Chapman.
Martha leaves to cherish her precious memories, her four children Stanley Chapman Jr (Francine), Deborah Young (Talmadge), Sandra Wise (Barry Sr.) and Darlene Chapman. Ten grandchildren, Shawn Chapman, Kyle Chapman (Suzanne), Bryan Chapman (Destiny), Corey Coley, Kevin Chapman, Rev. Barry Wise II (Kimberly), Justin Wise, Tianna Chapman, Aenyae Chapman, and Devante Chapman and fifteen great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. One sister Virginia Warren, one sister-in-law Melba Johnson and one brother-in-law Lewis Chapman (Jimmie) and one first cousin Raymond Johnson (Martha). A host of nieces and nephews and cousins.
