Celebrating the Life of Richard Nelson October 10, 1927 – May 2, 2020 Richard Nelson, age 92, of Somerset, New Jersey, passed away on May 2, 2020. Born October 10, 1927, in Camden, South Carolina; he was the son of the late James and Rosa (Richardson) Nelson. Richard left South Carolina and moved to Harlem, New York and then Scotch Plains, New Jersey, finally settling in Somerville, New Jersey, where he resided for over 40 years until retirement. Richard was a licensed barber and owner/general contractor of R&H Construction, based out of Somerville, New Jersey, where he served the community for over 30 years. He loved playing cards and enjoyed watching baseball and playing dominos. Richard was an avid gardener and often supplied his extended family and neighbors with fresh fruits and vegetables from his cherished garden. Richard loved his family and was always there to help relatives and friends in their time of need. Richard is survived by his daughters, Lorraine Davis (Harvey) of Atlanta, GA, Zenobia L. “Tiny” Nelson of Concord, NC, Tanda Fowler of Virginia Beach, VA, Jill Faulknor (Sheldon), and Heather Lamin (George) both of Somerset, NJ; sisters, Alberta “Berta” Scott and Janie “Rick” Nelson both of Plainfield, NJ, and Gertrude “Gert” Nelson of Greenville, SC; brother, Henry “Jock” Nelson (Vernell) of Camden, SC; grandchildren, Harvey F. Davis IV and Monica Davis of Atlanta, GA; Octavia Pratt and Altarae Curry of Virginia Beach, VA; Clinton, Jaylen and Mikayla Lamin of Somerset, NJ; great grand children Jaylah and Ahmarie Gibbs of Virginia Beach, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Mary Robinson, James Nelson, Robert Nelson, Mike “Dobe” Nelson, Sarah Henderson, Mahalia “Freda” Nelson, Hattie Steward, Charlie Nelson, Sophie Austin, Issac Nelson, George Nelson, Johnnie “Pee Wee” Nelson, Rosa Lee “Manda” Harden, and Louise “Lou” Allen. Due to COVID-19 federal restrictions on public gatherings, a private ceremony was held. A memorial will be planned at a later date. Services were entrusted to Plinton Curry Funeral Home, Somerset, NJ.
