Ruby May Maxwell, 96 of New Brunswick, NJ passed away on June 4, 2020 in Edison, NJ. Ruby was born on November 24, 1923 in Rogersville, AL to Will Armstead and Lillie May Bevis. Ruby attended public school in Florence, AL and moved to Ohio then to New Brunswick in the early 1950s. “Miss Ruby” as she was affectionately known to many in the community, worked as a domestic employee in Highland Park and New Brunswick for many years. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s she volunteered to work at the God Squad Food Pantry in New Brunswick. She was known for making the best tasting pies, cakes, desserts and fancy meals for family and friends and was frequently sought out to prepare and cater affairs around the New Brunswick area. This love of cooking and baking led Ruby and her husband James to ultimately operate a soul food restaurant on Remsen Avenue. Beyond cooking and baking, Ruby enjoyed playing cards, bingo and taking trips to various casinos. She also enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Ruby is predeceased by her spouse James Maxwell, mother Lillie May Boddie, father Will Armstead, son Jesse Johnson, grandson Kenny Beasley and great granddaughter Shereese Johnson. Left to cherish her memory are: sons William (Saundra) Beasley of New Brunswick, NJ; Frank (Edrine) Johnson of Kendall Park, NJ, and stepson Curtis Warner of Willingboro, NJ. Six grandchildren: Craig Johnson, Dwayne Johnson, Lisa Noel, Karen Beasley, Eric Johnson and Dexter Johnson. Seventeen great grandchildren, 23 great-great grandchildren and a great-great- great granddaughter and Goddaughter Jean Diggs-Holloway. She will be greatly missed by family and a host of friends. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Roosevelt Care Center in Edison, NJ and a special thanks to the caretakers. A private service will be held with Reverend Conway C. Johnson, Jr. of Sharon Baptist Church of New Brunswick, NJ officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sharon Baptist Church of New Brunswick, NJ. Forever in our hearts.
