Obituary of Bernice Jeannette Phillips

Bernice Jeanette Phillips, age 99 entered to eternal rest on March 28^th 2022 at the Somerset Woods Rehab/Nursing Home in Somerset NJ following a short stay.

Bernice J. Phillips was born on October 9^th 1922 in Hixon TN, outside of Chattanooga TN. To the parents of Esther Hale and Eugene Phillips. Bernice grew up in TN where she attended Booker T. Washington High School in Hamilton County TN. Following graduation, she attended Howard University and Cornell University before graduating Tuskegee University (Alabama) with a degree in Commercial Dietetics (1947), where she had been a Pre-Flight Cook for the “Great Tuskegee Airman”. Leading to her becoming a Registered Dietitian working in Ithaca, NY for 5 years. Then moving to Plainfield, NJ thereafter Somerset, NJ. All before obtaining a job at the V.A. Medical Center in Lyons, NJ. She was employed there for 30 years before retiring in 1985. Miss. Bernice or Ms. Phillips as she was known as, loved to travel and has seen many places throughout the USA, as well as being an avid baker making things such as rolls, cookies, and breads all from scratch. Add reading the newspaper to the list of things she enjoyed each and every day. She was also very generous in her multiple donations to various foundations and organizations. Sister Bernice was a dedicated member of the Southern New Jersey Alumni Association, where she attended Tuskegee class reunions and Regional Alumni conferences .Whilst living she was a devoted and caring member of the Parkside Senior Citizen Club. She attended MT ZION A.M.E. Church in New Brunswick, NJ since 1963 where she has been a faithful member for over 25 years till the day of March 28^th 2022.

Ms. Bernice was preceded in death by (Sisters) Grace Brannon, Gladys McMurray, Margaret Phillips, and Jean Brown. (Brother) Benjamin Phillips (Mollie)

Ms. Bernice J. Phillips leaves to mourn her; (Son) Wendell L. Phillips (Shirley). (Grandchildren) Freddie L. Mosley Jr of Columbia SC, Tansy S. Wright (Dontaves) of Lithonia GA, Wenton M. Phillips of Plainfield NJ, and Branden J. Phillips of Plainfield NJ. (Niece) Beverly Hazelwood (Darryl) of Swedesboro, NJ. (Cousin) David Singleton (Jeanette) of Marina CA. As well as 2 (Great Grandchildren) Christian A. Wright and Joseph E. Wright of Lithonia GA. And an abundance of Grand Nieces and Nephews, and Cousins.
