Obituary of Queen Esther Green

Queen Esther Green was born on January 1, 1952 to Dorothy M. Green and the late Raymond C. Green, Sr. in Florence, South Carolina. On December 9, 2020, God did what No Man can do; HE HEALED her body and welcomed her to her new home in Glory.

Although her birth name was Queen Esther, you dare not speak it to her face. “Sister” as she was more commonly known, attended Newark’s Miller Street Elementary School after relocating from South Carolina in 1963. She continued her education at South Side (M.X. Shabazz) High School where she was president of the Red Cross and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) graduating in 1970.

At an early age Sister accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was later baptized. A woman of faith and family, Sister was a faithful member of Gospel Mission Baptist Church in Newark where she served on many auxiliaries in various roles. It was here that she began introducing Christ to her daughter in hopes that one day Shaintell (Shany) would get to know Jesus for herself. Sister served on just about every auxiliary that the church had and many of those in a leadership capacity. One of her greatest roles that brought her joy was being the head of the Pastor’s Aide Committee. She believed in doing all she could to assist the late Dr. Peter Johnson, Sr. in serving the Lord. She remained a faithful member of the church until relocating to Westbury, NY in 1989.  Sister was employed by Pathmark Supermarkets and People Care Home care services for many years ultimately retiring from People Care in 2012 as a certified personal companion.

If you knew her then you know that some of her favorite things to do were to watch ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING SCI-FI and Twilight Zone marathons. Just don’t call her while she was watching TV; that was a No, No. Along with this, she loved to dance, crochet, puzzle books, play Pokeno and without a shadow of a doubt: BINGO - hands down! B 15, BINGO! She enjoyed crocheting and making pillow covers, blankets, place mats and just about anything you can think of. She would crochet something, take it apart and start from scratch just because she was “messing around.”

Nobody could “Mississippi Mud Slide'' or cut a rug better than Sister. She would dance so hard that she would have to go sit down, get her inhaler and wait until she could catch her breath. Then she would get up and do it all over again. A lover of music she loved “The Blues” the most. Don’t let a song come on and it brought back a memory or two; she would yell out “That’s it Right There.” Although she loved to sing her blues; she never would sing the words at the right time and her daughter would tease her about that.

Sister loved her family dearly and loved to sit and laugh with them every chance she got. She loved telling old stories of growing up in the South and how hard they had it but God carried them through. She instilled in her daughter to always lean and depend on God no matter the circumstance. She believed that when it’s your time; it’s your time and that Better Days are coming. Sister is already GREATLY MISSED but we rejoice in knowing that she is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Sister is predeceased by her father Raymond (Boogie) and her siblings: James (King), Melonie, Raymond (Curtis), Jr. and Dorothy Ann. She leaves to mourn her daughter Shaintell and son-in-law Leslie Alexander, her mother-Dorothy M. Green, sisters: Dianne, Shirley, Deborah, Darlene Harris and sister-in-law Barbara Bennett.  She also leaves to mourn her grandchildren: Christina (CD), Noel (Tyler) , one great grandson, Elijah; adopted son: Jeffrey McGrimmon and a host of nieces, nephews and family.
