Her Journey

Georgia Lee Hurdle Winslow passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 18,2021, 9:05 am at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, in Brooklyn, NY.  She was born on September 25, 1933, in Hobbsville, N. C., the fourth of 7 children born to Ruth and William H. Hurdle. After graduating from  T.S. Cooper High School in North Carolina, Georgie married her husband Junie B. Winslow and from this marriage a son, Keith Edwards Winslow was born. Several years later, Georgie met Napoleon M. Woodhouse, from that union,  they became the parents of a son they named Reginald .

Georgie received her early religious training and baptism from the Joppa Missionary Baptist Church in Hobbsville, NC. That training was the foundation for Georgie’s relationship with family and friends. Georgie was a caring mother to her sons and worked very hard to keep her boys on the straight and narrow. She has been a mom to many; she was selfless and loved unconditionally no matter what journey or path they were traveling. She always enjoyed good times in the presence of family and friends.

Georgie attended The Urban Center on Vanderbilt Avenue in Brooklyn, and Brooklyn College where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education which started her career in early childhood.

Georgie worked with children at The One Stop Day Care Center and The Salvation Army Day Care Center. Between the One Stop Day Care and The Salvation Army Day Care systems, she found joy and pride in teaching and helping to mold young minds for over 30 years.

Georgie absolutely loved to take walks down memory lane. She talked hours about her upbringing, speaking of the times that she was not able to go to school because she did not have clothes or shoes to wear.  She also talked about the family’s faith in God that helped her to realize that it did not matter what circumstance you came from, it was where you were going that was important.  She would share this philosophy with her sons and all the children that she taught.

Georgie’s presence exuded the nature of compassion and humility.  When she shared her thoughts, visions, and truths the delivery was one of mildness and calm. She was all about the business of building you up, encouraging you, believing in you at each step or crossroad. She was never judgmental or spoke to any one with distain leaving them feeling less than worthy. She always got her point across and made sure you were clear regarding her advice or expectations. Though quiet and subdued she was truly the sun, moon, and a rainbow in the lives of many.

Georgie was preceded in death by her parents Ruth and William Hurdle, two brothers, Theodore Roosevelt Hurdle (Tamp), James S. Hurdle (Bud); two sisters Sarah Mae Winslow and Earlene Draines,  sister in law Gladys M. Hunter Hurdle Mitchell and brothers in law Ulysses S.Draines and Melton R. Winslow.

She leaves to treasure and cherish her memories her loving sons Keith and Reginald,
2 grandchildren Krystal and Nikki, two sisters Diris Marie White, Cellusteen Martin, Sister-in-Law Libbie Billups Hurdle, very important and special friends Joseph and Jean Blount, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
