In this hour of grief, I remember Rev. Lance, a beacon of compassion, faith and understanding. He was remarkable for Christening my children and embraced us all with an enduring spiritual legacy. Heartfelt condolences to the entire Nelson family during this difficult time. May the memories of his benevolent life bring you comfort and peace.

In remembering a poem/statement that our ancestor Aunt Bennie wrote on our family- many years ago- I submit my own:
"We are a Family of Champions born of Kings and Queens. Our elders and ancestors have taught us how much service to others and education are hallmarks and pathways to success".
"Our long rich history includes leaders in industrĂ¿ and long careers- especially entrpreneurship".
Cousin Lance was a King. Not only in the way that he carried himself, but also how he took the time to listen and council. The last time that I saw him, was at the wake for our Uncle Rock, Jr. We had a conversation about Family that was very important to me. I brought to him my thoughts. He lead me to understand that future conversations would allow me to see a more full picture. I agreed.
Many moons ago Lance hired me as a van driver in New Brunswick. A part of my job responsibilities was to transport people from their group home to their appointments. It was through that summer work that I got more insight into Lance's commitment to serve community.
A number of tears back, Lance officiated the funeral for our Unlcle David (Tyrone) in Florida. With the help of my Mother (she used her cell phone speaker) so that my brother Eric, Aunt Brenda and I could hear parts of the service. As I remember it, that small coordination meant everything to us back here in Jersey.
Family being so important to him, Lance and I also talked about his want to bring family for a reunion. It reminded me of the planning and organization that took place 'a generation ago' with our family. Our Grandparents and their cousins began putting plan to action and before long- family gatherings began happening. Starting inNew Jersey (1991) there was a 4 location rotation between New Jersey, Thomasville and Waycross, Georgia and Kissimmee, Florida. Our timing model was always based on: 'One year for planning, one year for doing'.
Lance's outreach was such that I wanted to share with him a concept for budgeting and financial saving for future. It could be used by anybody
(wherever they are). The concept recently came to mind, when thinking back to family reunion committee assignments. I heard the term, "Each one, teach one".
I miss Lance and will always keep his advice and council with me.
