Obituary of Robert Mason

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert Darnell Mason of Dunellen, New Jersey went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 23,2024. He passed away quietly at Robert Wood Johnson Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ with his wife of 24 years Camille Mason at his side.

Robert was born on August 17, 1952 to John Albert and Velia Minerva Mason in Harlem, New York. Robert was an accelerated student and entered school with advanced reading and math skills that were well above the level of his peers. His parents were both blind and placed a high value on education. They taught Robert to do math calculations and how to read through instructing him on a building block learning system they developed themselves.

Robert experienced a few challenges during his early years. Robert’s life was redirected to a life of great service to his family, friends and community to the Glory of God.

He was able to persevere because he was a survivor, and the lord was faithful. The adage “you have to work your way to the top”; Robert took that literally. He worked his way up from custodial services to becoming the Director of a Drug Rehabilitation Center. His record of assisting individuals with substance abuse disorders was unprecedented. After retirement He became a servant of the court.

Robert Mason was a man of class, style and conviction.  He always carried himself with a dashing sharp style which he admitted he received from his father. His father Albert, although blind, was able to coordinate his outfits with panache and fervor and Robert was his avid pupil. He prided himself as always looking his best. He also had an affable sense of humor. He could retell and weave a story like no one else. He captivated his audience with superlatives, absurd quotes and anecdotes, either way you were hooked.

Robert, affectionately known as Bobbie, put all these skills to work, when he met and married his wife, Camille who he often referred to as the love of his life.

Robert Mason was a long-standing member of Family of Christ Life Center, Middlesex New Jersey. He was the man of the hour with all the mothers of the church. Serving them was his way of serving the Lord with gladness. The kind of man he was, is demonstrated in how he took on three children as his own. Never missing a beat in being a father and grandfather.  He always made time for his cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Being with family was His happy place.

Robert was predeceased in death by his parents John Albert and Velia Minerva Mason, and his brother Charles Mason.   He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Camille Mason, his brothers John Mason (Valerie), Walter Chambers, Richard Luster, his cousins Velia Jackson (Leonard), Darlene Cornelius, his children Keitauna M. Doman, Tyhree Hall, Jonard Hall, his Godson Lysaun Newby, and his two amazing grandsons Jaden and Cyrus Doman and lovely granddaughters Channen Doman and Sasha Hall, and also a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
