This is a poem by Jim Morrison of the band The Doors. I shared this song with Bilal and he loved that I shared something different with him- he could get into it because it was spoken words to rock music. He really liked it and understood the meaning behind the lyrics. He would always say “that dude be talking some straight shit.” I always made sure to play it when we were working together. Following is an excerpt-from the last three verses of “AN AMERICAN PRAYER”:
… Do you know how pale & wanton thrillful
comes death on a strange hour
unannounced, unplanned for…
We live, we die
& death not ends it…
Death makes angels of us all
& gives us wings
where we had shoulders
smooth as raven’s
claws
No more money, no more fancy dress
This other Kingdom seems by far the best…
